Thinking about getting your hands dirty and trying out ceramics? That’s fantastic! Whether you’re looking for a fun date idea, a solo artistic journey, or a new family activity, a ceramic try class at Dusty Co. Ceramic is a perfect way to dive in.
We know starting something new can be a little intimidating, so we've put together everything you need to know to feel prepared, confident, and excited for your first pottery class!
1. Preparing for Your Ceramic Adventure - 1st pottery class
Getting ready for your class is easy—we've handled the heavy lifting (like prepping the clay!). Here are a few simple things to keep in mind before you arrive:
Book Your Spot: Our classes require booking online for a specific date and time. It’s the best way to secure your place! You’re welcome to bring a friend, partner, or family member to share the experience, or enjoy a solo journey to embrace this new creative experience.
Need to change your plans? We allow rescheduling 48 hours in advance, so just let us know!
Dress Comfortably: You will be playing with water, clay, and possibly glazes. We encourage you to wear something you don't mind getting a little muddy and dusty—it’s all washable, of course! We provide aprons, rugs, and sponges for basic cleaning needs.
Pro Tip: If you have a fancy dinner reservation with a dress code right after class, handbuilding or painting might be a safer option than wheel throwing!
2. What to Expect: Wheel Throwing

Ready to try the iconic potter's wheel? It's a truly mesmerizing experience.
Your instructor will demo the whole process first, so you can see all the steps from start to finish. Once you’re at the wheel, your session will be a hands-on experience where you'll:
Center the clay on the wheel.
Open up the clay.
Shape and curve your piece.
Try some finishing techniques, if time allows and you're interested!
It's an interactive process! You’ll experience different sensations as the clay responds to your touch. We even encourage a little "conversation with the clay"—it’s all about getting a feel for the material.
We Respect Your Boundaries: Similar to a yoga class, your instructor will check with you to see if you prefer physical touch support for the experience. You are free to say yes or no to hands-on guidance. We want you to feel comfortable and have the best experience possible!

3. What to Expect: Handbuilding
Handbuilding offers a different kind of freedom—it’s flexible, free-form, and completely in your hands.
Your instructor will demo basic techniques like pinching, coiling, or slab-building. From there, you can let your imagination run wild! Handbuilding allows you to make almost anything, such as:
Jewelry dishes
Hand-pinched bowls or espresso cups
Dining plates or serving dishes
Mugs or small sculptures
No Idea? No Problem! If you don’t have an idea coming into class, don't worry! Your ceramist will show you some ideas and demo different techniques. It’s all about trying things out and playing with the clay to discover what you want to create (or not create!).
It’s All About Play and Personal Memory
Whether you choose the fast spin of the wheel or the careful construction of handbuilding, the goal of your first try class is simple: to get familiar with and play with clay.
You're here to make something personal and, most importantly, make some memories. We can’t wait to see what you create!
